American River - February 24th, 2007
RECORDED:    52 °    FISHING: Good
Fishing is fair to good for Steelhead in the upper river. Guide Grant Fraser has been consistently catchng fish in the 8-12# range. Most fish have ben in the river so they are getting darker, but the occasional chromer is showing up, as is evidenced by the 10 pound beauty shown on the site.

Call Sierra Fly at 530-823-6968 for a guided trip in this area!

Fish are scattered present in the entire system, from the mouth to Nimbus Basin. Dawn and dusk are best, but fishing around redds will pick up fish during the day.

Nymphing using egg patterns and caddis pupae is effective. Swinging a traditional Steelhead pattern, such as am egg sucking leech, will also catch fish. Try a Copper John or a San Juan work if fish are stubborn.

Flies - Steelhead:
Egg patterns 8-10
Caddis Patterns 10-16
Egg Sucking leech 4-8
Silver Hilton 6-10
Green Butt Shunk 6-10 Flies - Stripers

Yuba River - February 22nd, 2007
RECORDED:    53 °    FISHING: Fair
Lower Yuba River
Fishing is fair - starting to get better!

Well, with the rising water, a little color and flies hatching, it's starting to look better for the Yuba - finally. Flows are supposed to go above 2000 cfs this weekend, and there is some dirt coming in from Deer Creek.

Multiple hatches have started; BWOs and PMDs on cloudy days; March Browns and Skwala Stone flies are starting to hatch out. Fish the shallows and tail outs.

Stone Fishing best from 1-5. Nymph early and look for caddis or BWOs late in the day. Fair numbers of fish are present and are starting to spawn, so leave them alone on the beds. A Stone and a March Brown emerger is picking up the most fish.

Numphing using a Stone and an AP Nymph is picking up fish when they are not actively rising in choppy water and holes.

Check out cdec.water.ca.gov for flows if the rains come.
